Cholla cactus
View from Route 66, Arizona

Route 66 winds its way through desert areas in western Arizona.  Cholla cactus proliferate here by dropping stems, which are carried away by hapless animals ... or unlucky tourists.  The thick population of cholla near Oatman, Arizona, means the desert floor is littered with the fallen stems, waiting for an unwary visitor to brush against them or step on them.
