Arizona Sycamores at Montezuma's Castle, Arizona

The Arizona park where this picture was taken -- Indian cliff dwellings known as Montezuma's Castle -- offered many striking views in a relatively small setting, of the texture of the cliff, the remains of the Indians' handiwork, and the river and landscape in front of the cliff.  In late afternoon sun, these sycamores stood out against the gathering shadows.  Their texture and light accented the scenery to the eye.  In life these trees leap out of the scene, but in a photograph they compete with the infinite detail of the other trees, cliffs and carpet of dead leaves, so I experimented with a combination of layers and filters to create their dramatic appearance as I saw it.
